Ever since I was a child, I have always witnessed my father serve our family as a loving parent and our community as a volunteer firefighter with a strong sense of love and dedication. Even after a stressful day at work, he’d still spend quality time with the family and also helps in doing our household chores. Most often, I see the exhaustion in his eyes, yet he never fails to show his unconditional love and support in every way. However, an occasion that struck me the most was when a huge fire engulfed a residential area in our locality, and that day, my father was extremely busy conducting a store inventory. In my case, I started doing small deeds of kindness in school. As one of the privileged students, I decided to assist and guide my fellow schoolmates in the field of Math and other subjects, even if it means losing my time for lunch on that day. During my first encounter, I would try to personally put myself into their shoes so that it would be easier for me to relate to their current situation. In every problem that they would encounter in Math, I would try my best to guide them through the complete process from the solution down to the conclusion. Honestly, the procedures are very time-consuming. I was very tempted to just give them the answers, but that wouldn’t have been helpful for them. To me, the only thing that mattered most was my tutees’ ability to grasp the lessons with a complete understanding. After experiencing more situations like this, I came to realize that doing acts of kindness actually makes me truly happy. The entire experience was truly wonderful and priceless! The horrific loss of shelter, basic commodities and life really grieved me, and more so of those who have families in the region. In response to the needs of the communities devastated by the recent calamity, I took part in different repacking programs in the city at the Mactan Airbase in Cebu. This took several weeks to complete, so I really had to balance my schoolwork with my endeavors to serve. And to assist in sustaining the quick recovery of those who were affected, I also participated in our school’s “Roof for Relief Program” which helped the victims in rebuilding their houses for a fresh new start.
