When we are little we are told that life is not fair. We should learn to deal with disappointments and handle whatever curves life throws at us. As a male I was told to do all this without crying, without getting emotional, but instead to suck it up and move on. When I was 19 I decided to join the Army. I thought that the life training I had been given so far would carry me through the military and I would come out exactly the same person I was when I went in. I was very wrong. By the age of 20 I had been deployed to Iraq and I while I thought I was prepared to handle whatever might be thrown my way, I was about to get a very rude awakening. At the age of 21, while out on patrol, my convoy came under fire and my truck was hit with an IED. Thankfully I lived but I was knocked out and suffered a TBI , traumatic brain injury. As a result, I will never really be the same as I once was. I came home angry and out of control. I drank all the time, I acted recklessly, and I was not a very good husband.
