The Fundamentals of Excellence If you put a group of people in a room and ask them what excellence is, you will receive many different answers, but they should have something in common. From early on we acknowledge “Excellence” but we never go into specifics on what is excellent. People are not born with excellence. They are introduced by an idea of what is excellent. To understand how it can be obtained is never really described. By first developing the mindset that achieving excellence is a journey not a destination. As a child, my elementary teacher uses to refer to excellence as being a “perfect student” with outstanding grades with great work ethics. I would push myself into focusing on my education. Unfortunately, this egotistic idea that being perfect didn’t describe the definition of excellence. I was once told that I did not know how to read by my teacher. My mother would defend me and say “my child can read, he spends hours practicing and writing”. I ended up going to summer school. Demonstrating to myself and to my summer school teacher that I could actually read. Dedicating my time to setting a goal to help me achieve excellence. Having this desire for wanting more lead myself into believing my goal was going to become realistic. Not limiting myself to achieve excellence and letting failure discourage me. Staying after school to work with my educators on subjects I didn’t quite understand. Failure was not an option. According to Robin Morgan “Excelling at anything (even excelling oneself) is inherently elitist because it implies one winner- which in return it implies at least one or even many losers”. Understanding the efforts I put assisted me by not limiting what I can do. Acquiring skills and talents that I never knew I had in school impacted on how I was starting to achieve excellence. I like to compare excellence to a canon camera. Additionally the company is always improving and refining their products. Canon cameras shoot the photos to come out with high definition quality. Canon puts the time and effort and excels in making every camera worth purchasing. The capability used to bringing the best out of your work.
