The Price to Live This Life In this day and age we are forced to go above and beyond to meet high requirements to live a satisfying, if not, decent life. With the increasing population, many people face financial hardships just to get by with day to day life. The cost of living is rising without the proper increase to minimum wage; people are struggling to get by trying support themselves or their families. However, this could all be alleviated if one were able to acquire the right education. College may be one of the few answers to freeing oneself from the reign of a low-income lifestyle. However, now I feel as if it is not so much my decision and rather what is needed in the economy as of this moment. I do not have the option to pick and choose what I want to do because the current economy may not be demanding it and I would be left with a degree that I could do nothing with; it all feels a bit unfair really. For me, college was an option I did not want to take, but soon after realizing the harshness of the economy, it is something that I needed to do to make life easier in the end. College is there to help improve your financial income, but it seems more often than not, students get dragged down by debt from the loans that helped them get in. “Taking out loans to finance a college education has left many young people in a position similar to that of the first Europeans who came to America as indentured servants.” (Williams) Jeffrey Williams hits the nail right on the head by stating the severity of student loans and the debt that follows up. After they finish their degree, those who finished college have to worry more about paying off their debt then they do their rent, and that is if they even can. The sheer amount of money many students need loaned to them is staggering if not overwhelming. Nationwide, more than $17 billion in private student loans were issued last year [2006], up from $4 billion 2001 (Gordon). That is an enormous fee to pay off across the board especially if you have nothing to back you, like a job or family.
