As a society we preach individuality. We reward innovation. We cherish creativity. We make incredible technological advancements everyday. Today, we all carry devices that are the size of a deck of cards, yet the information is vast, endless, and available in seconds. We have machines that can do anything from washing your clothes to transporting people from one side of the world to the other, forty thousand feet in the air. In the last century, everything we’ve ever known has changed, except the educational system. Our society recognizes that each child thinks differently, and claims to help them prepare for the future through education. But do we really do everything we can to foster success for the next generation? The answer is no, and it isn’t even debatable. In our society today, grades are valued over learning. Today’s system puts enormous amount of stress on students. You could have complete knowledge on a topic, but one mistake could jeopardize your future. Your grade point average could plummet. Colleges could deny you. It could change your life. Our society is backwards. Since when have numbers on a piece of paper been more important than educating students about worldly topics like history, philosophy, biology, and foreign language. The educational system clearly needs to be revised, as there are many outdated techniques still in use. Students should learn the way that is best for them, not sitting in desks arranged in rows, inside of classrooms for hours while teachers lecture.
