I would consider myself to be a contemplative person. I lose myself in thought regularly and innumerable subjects fascinate me. However, the subject which I consider to be the most intriguing is astronomy. Specifically cosmology, the branch of astronomy concerned with the origin of the universe. I find that I become unaware of time and space around me every time I think deeply about the universe, as it is so engaging. For example, in my junior year of high school, I took an astronomy class and it still remains my favorite class I have ever taken. At least once every day, my teacher would say something that would cause me contemplate the universe so deeply that I would entirely lose track of everything around me. Suddenly it was like I was no longer at school, I would lose myself in thought. Questions regarding the Big Bang theory, whether the universe has a shape, or the nature of black holes would fully occupy my mind. Before I knew it, the bell would ring and it would be time to leave for another class. Every day, I dreaded hearing that bell since I knew that the rest of my day would be mind-numbing in comparison. Furthermore, by studying how the universe behaves, we unlock pieces of the puzzle of true understanding. Humanity in its entirety knows so little concerning where life came from, and what lies beyond the Earth, that in astronomy there are far more questions than solid answers. Moreover, even the greatest minds can ponder and investigate such questions endlessly, and not find a conclusion, which I find to be incredibly captivating.
