An academic interest of mine is chemistry. When I was in 10th grade, I took honors chemistry to fulfill my high school requirement. I had an inspiring chemistry teacher who has encouraged and fostered a love for the science. I wanted to continue to broaden my understanding of chemistry, so I signed up to take AP Chemistry for the following year. That class was hands down the most enlightening and interesting course I have ever taken. After I took the AP Chemistry class, I decided I wanted to help others get excited about the sciences so I founded the first Chemistry Club at my high school. I go to a magnet school where the focus an environmental science, the Florida wetlands. Throughout the four years that I have been in the magnet program, I have learned about critical issues such as sustainability, pollution and biodiversity.It is exciting for me to learn about this because it deals with everyday situations, and it will continue to hold relevance in the coming years. In the program we took a hands-on approach where we participated in academic service learning activities. We went into state parks to remove exotic and invasive plants, we also got our school involved with a recycling program. To earn our magnet diploma, we have an individual research project which involves our community. This project is perhaps the most exciting part of the environmental science program since we get to reach out to our community and apply the knowledge we have learned throughout those four years. I have learned what it means to truly be a steward and advocate for our environment, and these are lessons that are hard to forget or ignore.
