In order to be a student-athlete one needs to develop excellent time management skills to cope with schoolwork, practices, and games. Running distance on Sheehan’s Indoor and Outdoor track teams has taught me the value of determination, perseverance and the value of hard work. It has taught me to persevere through the hard times and fight with all my heart because the results are worth the effort. I am able to implement this sense of hard work throughout the different aspects of my life. The life skills that I have learned from being a distance runner has helped me manage my time in the past when I played soccer, played the trumpet in the marching band, and still maintained a high GPA. The concept of pushing through till the end and never giving up helped me through those exhausting days, and the countless hours of homework that followed. These concepts learned from my countless hours spent on the track, running until I physically can not run any longer, currently helps me get through the homework load of three AP class and three honors classes on top of track practices, musical rehearsals, and club meetings. The workload leaves me exhausted at the end of the day, but distance running has taught me that giving up is never an option; therefore I push through those long nights in order to complete my work on time. Running distance tests of one’s physical endurance and who can push past the pain to run the race with all their effort. The concept of being a student-athlete comparatively is like running distance. In order to be successful in their field, a student-athlete needs to muster all the endurance they contain within their body and push through the hectic schedules while still maintaining their grades.
