For as long as I can remember myself I have always wanted to conduct research and to impart knowledge to other people. One of the most defining and rewarding experiences of my life was to tutor high school students with financial difficulties on math and to prepare them for school exams. At the same time, the course “Topics in Operations Research and Decision System” ignited my enthusiasm for scientific research and made me recognize the field’s significance and wide range of applications. My next goal is to pursue graduate studies in Operations Research at MIT in order to deepen my knowledge and thus follow a successful career in academia or business.

To further familiarize myself with the area, I am currently enrolled in two courses on those fields; “Combinatorial Optimization” taught by Prof. Yiannis Mourtos and “Data Science and Web Mining” taught by Prof. Michalis Vazirgiannis. In the latter course, all the teams work on the same data set from the Kaggle platform and are required to implement different methods of supervised or unsupervised learning in order to deduce useful information. The most important ones in choosing this program are, firstly the academic reputation of the university, and secondly the impact of the research by the Professors at the Operations Research Center. More specifically, the research of Prof. Dimitris Bertsimas is fascinating and inspiring to me as his research demonstrates how data analytics could be utilized in order to improve health services. Additionally, his work on how integer optimization could ameliorate the effectiveness of machine learning methods is important for that field. I have also looked at Prof. Andrew W. Lo’s research on big data and financial engineering. During my studies I dealt with financial management and investment analysis and I was intrigued to see Prof. Lo’s research on how machine learning methods could reduce financial
