Diversity can be defined as differences in ethnicity, culture, orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, age, ability, experience and thought. How will you make UT Dallas more diverse? (500 words or less)
As a child born from parents the emigrated from Ethiopia, I frequently participate in common Ethiopian customs. For instance, I would attend my local Eastern Orthodox Church every Sunday to refine and indulge in my Christian faith, eat our national Ethiopian dish called Injera, a soft flat bread, with wat, a stew occasionally accompanied with meat, vegetables or poultry for dinner on schooldays and for lunch on the weekends. Culture aside, I also obtain an esteemed health science education experience. Likewise, over time I have become more competent in following my desired path; starting from my freshman year I have took rigorous courses in the sciences which were enlightening. During my sophomore year, I took my first true health science class called principles of health science, colloquially known as PHS. In PHS, I learned skills fundamental to pursuing healthcare such as vital signs, ethics, medical terminology, body mechanics and many more. However, my junior year provided further insight which was essential for ensuring I was truly interested in pursuing healthcare. The level of rigor of my courses increased, as I began taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes in the sciences including AP Chemistry and AP Physics 1. In addition, I was accepted into a reputable class called Clinical Rotation which only thirty students were admitted to. Furthermore, Clinical Rotation was the most significant course I had taken in the health sciences because of the extensive depth of each unit we studied.
