Sexual assault is a very delicate topic that brings many controversial opinions, but many only see the negative events and not times where things were done correctly. Many judge when they have the opportunity without thinking of other times where justice was brought. In the article, “College Sex-Assault Trials Belong in Court, Not on Campus” written by Philip N. Cohen, Cohen is against college sex assault trials being dealt by college authorities. He judges college authorities as not dealing with sexual assaults correctly. Even though, Cohen makes good points about times where the authority was not honest, his arguments are not backed up by supporting information. It’s clear he has an emotional effect towards the subject, because he’s concerned about the topic. It’s possible to agree with Cohen’s point, due to the fact that it’s very know that campus penalties don’t include prison sentences, but in many campuses when someone is accused of sexual assault, sexual assault is written on the student’s transcript, which will affect the student long term. It’s obvious, that Cohen has a problem with college’s authority because he confirms he believes colleges, “undermine trust in both the authorities and the victims who turn to them for help” (Cohen). Also he throws out couple of solutions that he believes, would help the sex assault situations in college campuses and one is to, “suspend students who are charged with violent crimes”(Cohen). But that would be unfair, to students that made a mistake in the past and are really trying to accomplish something. For that reason being said, that’s why colleges take a different route when it comes to sexual assault investigations. It’s vibrant, that Cohen doesn’t understand the difference between college sex assault trials and in court trials, but it’s understood that Cohen has positive intentions in protecting
