DBQ - Democracy in Colonial America Essay Due to the distance from the mother country the thirteen colonies in America began early on. Democracy in colonial America was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features. There for people people had hard times here and there.
LEQ prompt 1 During the period between 1607 and 1754, the British had established colonies in North America, inspired by the riches and wealth gained by the Spanish upon the conquest of the Aztecs and Incas in the 16th century, the early British settlements had hoped for the same riches and discoveries in the northern Americas. The first successful permanent settlement was established in Jamestown Virginia, and as time advances the English established thirteen colonies divided geographically into three regions: new England, middle and southern colonies. Socially the English colonists were similar by the means that they shared an English heritage but differed greatly in lifestyle, politically and economically the colonies had many differences,
By the beginning of 1763, the colonials began to refuse British policies. As new imperial policies increased, due to the French and Indian war, the colonials were angered with British rule, and wanted to gain independence. From 1763 to 1776, the British began to impose new policies that greatly intensified colonials resistance to taxation and the limitation of freedom; making their commitment to republican values stronger.
Before America became it’s own country, the American colonists had to work hard to fight for what they wanted. America didn’t do all its own work, the British helped them to achieve their goal. The British encouraged the American colonists to work harder to become independent by provided them with reasons to fight. Mercantilists believed that colonies existed for the home country, and not for settlers.
In 1607, the first colonists arrived in the new world,today, known to us as America. This colony was the Jamestown colony. Eventually more colonists came and created bigger colonies like the massachusetts colony In 1774, upset by the boston tea party and other blatant acts british Parliament passed a law intended to punish the people of massachusetts for their resistance. This act was called the Coercive act.
American colonists had no thoughts about unifying the colonies. However, they had already developed a sense of identity. Colonists had many attempts to unify the colonies, but most failed. Before the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, English colonists developed their sense of identity, such as being an American, loyalist and patriot, and unity between the colonies. In the middle of the 18th century, colonists already developed a strong sense of identity.
Women that were either slaves or Puritan, wouldn’t have been thought to have the ability to create pieces of poetry that would be carried and recognized through generations. Anne Bradstreet’s; To My Dear and Loving Husband and Phillis Wheatley’s; On Being Brought from Africa to America both completely contradict the idea that writing couldn’t follow religion and expresses emotion. These two authors had different approaches regarding their faith but their writing was completely faith-based. While Anne Bradstreet and Phillis Wheatley both express an incredible devotion to God, Anne Bradstreet’s devotion is rooted by her devotion to her husband, whereas Phillis Wheatley’s faith is a result of her salvation from Africa.

Jamestown colony and Plymouth colony have are two similar colonies but at the same time are so very different. One similarity is that each colony had a large number of deaths after winter. One difference is that Plymouth colony had a good relationship with the Native Americans and Jamestown didn't have a good relationships with them. Life in Colonial America was different for all those involved, which were the settlers of Jamestown, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay colony.. Jamestown, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay had similarities and differences. They each had their own unique leaders, form of government, economics, and ways of life, although all the settlers in these colonies had a deep dependence on God.
