Colonialism is an important topic in the novel, Things Fall Apart that causes societies to flourish, but it also causes societies to fall. Ibo society is a society that functions best by itself with no competition from other societies. Ibo society is unstable as even small-scale colonialism can cause Ibo society to fail. However, the true reason for the failure of Ibo society is colonialism. Achebe portrays the use of colonialism as having harmful effects on Ibo culture and community. Achebe illustrates that colonialism has a negative effect on Ibo culture by dividing Ibo people, which results in the downfall of Ibo civilization. Before the presence of colonialism in Ibo society, Ibo society functions most efficiently because Ibo people are united. When the Ibo people exile Okonkwo from the clan they, “had no hatred in their hearts against Okonkwo” (125). Although they have no hate towards Okonkwo for murdering the clansman, they are able to set apart the feelings they have and follow the Ibo rules. This gives the impression that Ibo people are all linked to one cause and set of rules. Another example of how Ibo people are united is Peace Week, during this week “no work was done” (31). Also, during this week, people cannot fight as Ezeani, who is an Ibo priest of earth goddess Ani say, “We should observe a week in which a man does not say a harsh word to his neighbor” (30).
