The Colonists Were Correct The Colonists were up to a great challenge, fighting Great Britain, an empire so large: “the sun never set on it.” The 13 Colonies of America were owned by England, and due to the “French and Indian War”, Britain was in a lot of debt. Due to many things that will be explained in this essay, the colonists revolted. It’s debated if the colonists should’ve revolted at all. The answer is that they were correct in their choice, and even justified in it. Although the British did have a debt to pay because of the French and Indian War, Britain still plunged the colonists into heavy taxes. First, the British forced many ridicules acts on the colonists, one of them being: the “Stamp Act” which forced the colonists to pay extra money for simple playing cards and newspapers. During the “Intolerable Acts”, the British blocked off any imports/exports from the Boston Harbor which started to starve the Bostonians, along with depriving them of other resources like tea. Next, the “Quartering Act” was also used against the colonists. Ten thousand British soldiers were sent to the colonies to enforce the acts already in place. Along with that, the colonists mandated to provide bedding, food, and drink to the soldiers. That was simply unfair because the colonists did not request the soldiers to come to their homelands. Finally, the Boston Massacre was a large incident that could not be overlooked. In the Boston Massacre five innocent colonists were killed and many more injured. “Why”, you might ask.
