In the book "The Adventures if Huckleberry Finn", Mark Twain's writing mirrors the society and problems it had in that time. This book promotes seeing African-Americans as people, which is absolutely groundbreaking and unheard-of in the time it was written, right after the Civil War. Throughout the book,, Huck has a complete change in his feelings towards Jim, starting with his highly influenced young mind, only able to view Jim as a slave, all the way to seeing Jim as a father-figure who can protect and provide for him. Although Huck tries to see Jim as a friend and fatherly-figure, society's beliefs don't allow him to see Jim as anything but a slave.
Huck has always seen Jim as a slave until they crossed paths while going down the river. The two develop a friendship and Huck starts to care about Jim and his well being. Although Huck views Jim as someone he cares about, he still sees him as a slave as well. “ I would do the right thing and the clean thing, and go and write that nigger’s owner and tell where he was,” ( Document E). Huck is in a continuous battle with his inner self when it comes to his views on Jim.
Summary: Through the voice of Huckleberry Finn, a deep criticism of racism and civilized society’s rules is narrated to the reader as Huck and Jim, escape from civilized society and set sail on a raft down the Mississippi river to slavery-free states. Both characters share a common goal: to be free of the rules that a civilized society places. Huck and Jim form an alternative family as they head down the river along with two white adult conmen they rescued, who commit many scams . In the story, a mild-mannered slave named Jim runs away from Miss Watson, his owner so that he can flee slavery and not be separated from his wife and children. He forms a friendship with Huck (whom isn’t sure if he should tell on Jim or not) as they make their way down the Mississippi River. Twain’s labels come into context when Jim realizes that “slave” was the label he could out run but “African American” was not. Jim spends the entire story running away from being a slave and then he finally realized that he couldn’t stop being African American. When Tom Sawyer is shot, Jim understands that he must sacrifice his freedom to save Tom.

Throughout the book Huck struggles with how he should treat Jim and if he should stick to his morals and what his conscience is telling him or if he should stick to his heart and do what he personally believes is right. He can either turn Jim in back to his owners and into the slave trade, or he can continue to travel with him and help him gain his freedom. This book proves that not everyone who grew up around racism was cruel, as Huck began to love Jim for who he is, despite the society he grew up in. An example of Huck maturing could come from chapter forty, "I knowed he was white inside, and I reckoned he'd say what he did say - so it was all right, now, and I told Tom I was agoing for a doctor." (Twain 301). This quote clearly shows that Huck is maturing, and seeing past the color of Jim's skin. The book shows us how hard it was to grow up in a racist society and not be racist.

It could be argued that Huck is not fully aware of the consequences of his actions, but as the reader sees time and time again, Huck is a very wise, very practical, very street-smart boy.
The short story “The devil and Tom Walker '' by Washington Irving represents the beliefs of the Dark Romanticism movement. In the story Tom has a strong ego and he makes decisions that he later regrets. Tom bargains with the devil to gain wealth; however, when he later regrets his decision, he becomes a violent church-goer. In the end, though, Tom is unable to fix his mistakes. Irving's story illustrates three major tenets of Dark Romanticism which includes the presence of the supernatural, the belief that nature is dark and evil, and the belief that individuals are prone to sin.
In summary, the controversial issue of racial equality and racism, in effect, makes Huck’s relationship with slaves (like Jim) slowly grow stronger throughout the novel. Moreover, racial equality and racism also affect the way Huck chooses to reject the societal norms of the late nineteenth century in order to bring two races together. In addition, everyone should understand the importance of racial equality and racism because of the stain they have left on American history and society as well as the affect these controversial issues have on people today.
