F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of the book The Great Gatsby, uses color throughout the novel to provide the reader with greater insight into a significant theme that expectations or hopes become false realities. The major colors in The Great Gatsby include: green, white, and yellow. The color green is used in the book to symbolize Gatsby’s lifelong dream and end goal of winning Daisy. The color white is used many times in association with Daisy. The color symbolizes pure beauty on the outside and hollowness on the inside. The colors yellow and gold are used to symbolize money and power. These colors are used in relation to Gatsby as he strives to achieve money and a high social status to get Daisy to see him.

White represents purity and superiority. Daisy seems to always be wearing white as she did when Nick visited her in East Egg. Nick describes Daisy and Jordan by saying, “...as cool as their white dresses and their impersonal eyes in the absence of all desire”(12). Daisy also wore white when she met Gatsby for tea at Nick’s. Many people see Daisy as pure and innocent the first time they meet her because of her beauty and soft personality. This is the reason why Gatsby is so obsessed with Daisy throughout his life. Although the color white is used to describe Daisy as pure and superior, the color can also be used to describe her as selfish and empty. Daisy is never forced to get anything done in life. Since she married Tom everything has been done for her. She, essentially, wastes everyday doing nothing. This aspect of Daisy’s life has made her greedy and given her a poor moral and a love for only the materialistic life. This makes Gatsby’s overall dream of winning Daisy’s love a false reality because Daisy’s will only ever love things that Gatsby can give
