In life many people unintentionally associate color with emotions, sounds, situations and feelings. In the realistic fiction novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, color symbolism plays an essential role in the general plot scheme of the novel. Colors are used in this novel to depict the feelings and emotions that the characters throughout the story experience. In this novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald writes of a man named Gatsby who is in love with a woman named Daisy. Gatsby is on a constant mission to woo Daisy back to him and away from her new husband. Fitzgerald uses colors such as blue, green, white, and gold to portray many different characteristics and feelings of the characters within the story. One main color used in this novel is green. The color green can symbolize hope in some situations and in other situations the color green can symbolize jealousy and in other situations green could also depict Gatsby’s need for money and wealth. Scott Fitzgerald uses the colors gold and silver to symbolize wealth. The setting of the novel included two major places: east and west egg. West egg is for the not wealthy people while East Egg is known for its wealthy people and it's extremely fancy and extravagant parties and people. For example some houses such as the house of tom and daisy that had, “French windows, glowing with reflecting gold” showing they have a very large amount of money if they could afford to have gold trimmed windows and it shows that they’re proud of their wealth because they show it off in the exterior of their house or everyone to see. Gatsby threw many huge fancy parties every weekend hoping that daisy would show up and even decorated them in gold and silver down to the toilet seat in hopes of impressing daisy.
