Green, white, yellow, and red may all seem like basic colors but to a The Great Gatsby reader these represent much more. In The Great Gatsby colors were to help give different scenarios more meaning and help the reader make different connections. Each color had its own meaning which made it easier for people to link different situations. Fitzgerald Color symbolism plays an essential role in the novel. Red helped symbolize many different things. All of the deaths and angry, bad behaved characters were all associated with the color red when they were being described by Fitzgerald. One of the most poor behaved characters in the novel is Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan is always described as being angry and, “Red and white were fundamental tone of color in Daisy and Tom’s villa. Since white symbolized personality characteristics of Daisy, red can show Tom’s individual character: selfish, arrogant, barbarous, and cruel.” (Xu 2013) As I mentioned before red is associated with all the deaths and more specifically blood. At one point in the story it started foreshadowing the end of the story, ‘“in front of wayside garages, where new red gas-pumps sat out in pools of light.” (Ibid 170) In this sentence, the author not only uses the color “red”, but also uses the word “pool”, which indicates the ending of the story’”(Haibing 5) The ending of “The great Gatsby” ended with Myrtle being hit by Daisy in front of the gas station. That quote was describing how Myrtle died in a pool of red blood in front of the gas pumps. Another major death that took place in this book was Gatsby’s.
