Seeing ads on TV, or even in the grocery store have become a normal thing. Every ad has something about them that catches the attention of millions of people daily. In this quote, Brown argues that by claiming equality and justice for the masses that have been excluded or marginalized, the whole definition of equality could be altered. By recognizing these groups, it does not necessarily mean that they are now being treated with equality, it just means that they are being acknowledged for having a place in society but they are not necessarily important. The left might now recognize groups that have been marginalized for years or even decades, and announce it publicly but this action could just be false rhetoric to persuade others that there is equality for everyone. Therefore, claiming justice or equality is a dangerous action.

In the short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman shows how the narrator gained more authority and freedom as her sanity was leaving her. Through the use of “I” many times in the first few sentences, a reader can see that the narrator is showing a sense of authority due to the fact the she is now in control of the events that are about to unfold. A key example of the repetition of the word “I” to show authority is, “But I must get to work. I have locked the door and thrown the key down into the front path. I don’t want to go out, and I don’t want to have anybody come in, till John comes.
As black women always conform under patriarchal principles, women are generally silenced and deprived of rights because men are entitled to control everything. Women are silenced in a way that they lose their confidence and hesitate to speak up due to the norms present in the society they live in. Hence, even if women have the confidence to try to speak, men wouldn’t bother to listen since men ought to believe that they are superior to women. In addition to that, women often live in a life cycle of repetitions due to patriarchal principles since women are established to fulfill the roles the society had given them. It is evidenced by Celie as she struggles to survive and to define oneself apart from the controlling, manipulative, and abusive men in her life.
