Since I have yet to start my own file, I have been faced with reflecting upon everything I hold important to me. I have never been one to keep a diary or a journal so I’m starting from the beginning. I know that I am “bounded by the private orbits” that I live in and that my thinking is limited since I think about subjects that directly affect me (Mills 1959: 3). But, some questions that I always have circling in my mind are why is there a certain image that society deems correct and incorrect. Why does society deem colored hair and piercings offensive? Why is colored hair seen as unprofessional? Why are tattoos seen as offensive to some people? Throughout my high school career, I have been to countless assemblies held by the principal that were held to inform the students what was acceptable to wear and say. If a student wanted to express themselves by wearing leggings with patterns on it, it was an automatic no and a potential demerit. A student was not allowed to dye their hair more than two shades lighter or darker. But being one of the few students that decided that they wanted to express themselves through fun colored hair, I know exactly how it feels to be deemed too extreme and been told that I need to dye my hair back. Being in an environment where I had little to no ability to express myself, I have seen what some parts of society see as too extreme. Where my small private Christian school saw colored hair and more than one piercing on each ear to extreme, other people out of my school just saw it as a normal way of expressing yourself.
