What Causes Civil Wars in Columbia There are many causes of the civil war in Columbia but the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army also called the FARC-EP and the drug trafficking supporting the FARC and other rebel groups is some of the leading causes supporting and causing the civil war to wage on. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-people's army or the FARC-EP is a group guerrilla group against the Colombian government. The FARC-EP is a terrorist organization, “Enhancing the colombian civil war between the government and other guerrilla groups and the drug cartels since 1964”(FARC). The drug trade has boomed over the past few years as the demand for cocaine and other illegal drugs in countries without legal power to stop it (Understanding Columbia). Colombia's cocaine production is not as high as it once was but is again on the rise. The hectares in coca production was 85,000 in 2013 and was 112,000 in 2014 which is a 60 ton jump(Is Columbia Again). With the coca production on the rise the main ingredient for cocaine is once again abundant for large scale production in columbia.Which brings in an increased amount money to buy weapons for soldiers allows for increased fighting. The FARC is colombia's largest insurgent group and is deeply involved in the colombian drug trade (Understanding Columbia). This allows the group to get large amounts of funding through drug smuggling and continue their insurgency. Also the FARC is taxing the drug cartels which is taking large portion of the profits from the cartels and causing more fighting.
