Columbina is one of the many loved stock characters of Commedia dell’ Arte. Perhaps the wisest character and undeniably the most rational, she is most times the only one who has her head on straight. Many describe her to be sassy, sexy and sarcastic. With her quick wit and unabashed flirtatious personality, she brings a strong female aura to the mix. She’s smart, sharp, self-educated and oozes confidence; never afraid to keep her fellow male counterparts in check, (even if it means whacking her own master across the head!)

It all depends on the play and what it needs or what may suit it best. Columbina could encompass a mix of both, just as strong and buxom as she is delicate and petite. As long as the essence of her character is kept, that should be sufficient, and that is a mix of everything really.
In relation to the other characters, besides being a servant, she can be a role model to others if for instance other female characters are present, usually other maids. They aspire to be like her. Colombina being very affectionate and helpful could teach them several things as simple embroidery to the more complex art of seduction.
She seeks a lover in Harlequino or may already be his lover. Sometimes a brother-sister like relationship may occur as well. However, most often, situations arise where quarrels happen between Harlequino and other characters who may wish to court Colombina. Such characters include il Capitano, il Doctore or Pantaloon (the son of Pantalone). Sometimes she is the rival to the Second Actress, tempting the Second Actor with her charms. She blatantly flirts with most male characters, besides her master, but doesn’t really mean it. You’ll know when she’s really interested, her overall flirtatious nature exploding
