Coming Of Age In Jon Kleihauer's Short Story 'The Cub'

Coming of age involves teens overcoming obstacles by finding the strength and power they had inside them as seen through the short story The Cub by Lois Dykeman Kleihauer, the TED Talk, Daring greatly and acting boldly by Chelsea Clinton, and the novel, United as One by Pittacus Lore. In the short story, The Cub by Lois Dykeman Kleihauer, the boy comes of age by finally becoming strong of enough to beat his dad in wrestling. The dad and his son always wrestle and the author describes it as, “It always ended with the boy on his back with his father grinning down on him ‘give’ ”(Pg 2). The author is saying that the dad always wins when they wrestles. Then over time the son gets stronger and him and his dad are wrestling and the author says, “his father stopped laughing but his eyes were still wet ‘okay’ He said ‘i give’ ”(Pg 2). Clinton is talking about how people born in this millennium have a chance to make changes in the world and then she says “You live up to your full potential and make the most of all the contributions that you desperately want to making that you have inside you even if you don't know they're there yet” Clinton is saying that everybody has strength inside them, they just need to find and then they can overcome impossible challenges. Then later in the Ted Talk, Clinton is talking about the impact of pressure when she says, “that pressure it's led to remarkable breakthroughs” Clinton is saying that the pressure that there is in the world, can lead to huge breakthroughs in the world.
