In the beginning of the story, Animal Farm by George Orwell, the seven commandments were a set of guidelines set up by Old Major. They were originally supposed to be used by the animals after the rebellion so they did not end up like the people they were rebelling from. As time went on through the story all the commandments changed in some way. First, “Whatever goes upon two legs is bad” and second, “Whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend”. These are basically condensed into one, for the less educated animals to understand, “Four legs good, two legs bad”. For most of the story this is still applied, Snowball even said “The only good human is a dead one” (Orwell, 71). But, throughout the story the farm starts trading and interacting more with humans. After this Napoleon changes the commandment to “No animal; shall sleep in a bed, with sheets”, to fit his liking. The pigs do not have enough power over the rest of the animals to do whatever they want without question yet so they change the commandment. Another is “No animal shall wear clothes”. The writing of the commandment was never changed but the pigs did start wearing clothes after they moved into the farmhouse. Napoleon was wearing Mr. Jones’ bowler hat which in the story it represents evil. Then in the last chapter it showed the pigs walking on two feet and wearing the clothes from the house, and Napoleon even carrying around a whip which would symbolize tyranny. “No animal shall kill any other animal” was broken when Napoleon started doing the executions. It was changed to “No animal shall kill any other animal, without cause.” “No animal shall drink alcohol” is broken when the pigs have a party and find whiskey in the farmhouse.
