I am a college student aiming to become an elementary school teacher and I also tutor elementary school students. I wasn’t taught through the common core system myself, but I’ve heard a lot of concerns towards this system from parents, teachers, and the students that I tutor. I believe that the Common Core should be repealed because it is causing unnecessary anxiety and lacks equity. New York quickly implemented Common core. According to the 2012 report from the Oakland-based education trust-west, New York implemented the Common core during the 2011-12 academic year while California did it later on (Freedberg). Task Force headed by the Parsons stated that the “implementation of the Common core standards…and tests in New York were rushed and improperly implemented. The result has been disruption and unneeded anxiety in our schools…” (Freedberg). Common core isn’t favorable within parents, students, and teachers. It moves the responsibility of a child’s education away from the parents (Johnson). The responsibility for children lies at home with the family. If the family doesn’t know anything taught in the Common core curriculum, how will it benefit the child? Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that students are spending too much time for exams, and the teachers are only focused on teaching the exams. If teachers only teach the exams, when will there be time for creativity in the classroom. Common core doesn’t benefit disabled and ESL students in anyway (Task Force 8). Teachers and schools should be provided elasticity to develop a curriculum to meet the standards of the students; this way, there will be fairness in the education system. I believe that people who have created the curriculum aren’t teachers and they can’t really see the struggles of the teachers and students who are going through this. The people who are given the power to create the curriculum should be people who are educated about students, teachers, and school
