Throughout his journey, Odysseus and his men faces numerous temptations. When Odysseus is at Circe’s island to rescue his men, as he and his crew were about to depart Circe tell Odysseus “Remain with me, and share my meat and wine’ restore behind your ribs those gallant hearts/ that served you in the old days, when you sailed/ from stony Ithaka. ”(X.509-511). Odysseus falls into the hands of Circe as she tempts the crew with as much meat and wine they want. He and his crew givegave into Circe’s island, regaining the fat he lost, as the year goes by.
To achieve Nostos, Greek travelers rely on the Zenia and generosity of their hosts in order to return home safely, as seen in Homer’s epic, The Odyssey. Weary Greek travelers depend on the zenia, or kindness, of their hosts and their willingness to accommodate them on their journey home. Typically hosts give zenia to increase the comfort of their guests, showering them with luxuries and gifts. Within The Odyssey, Odysseus’ son, Telemakhos, arrives at the home of Menelaos, an old friend of his father, in search of information regarding Odysseus. Telemakhos rests at Menelaos’ home until Athena arrives, urging him to return to Ithaka.
Kealan Chiu Mr. Fleitas English 1 Period 5th 2/7/23 Odysseus’s Journey with Manly Masculinity In her translation of the epic poem The Odyssey, Emily Wilson conveys that Odysseus has a cocky, stubborn, and negative masculinity, as seen through the word choices Odysseus uses. For example, Wilson expresses Odysseus's cocky masculinity when she says, "Cyclops! If any mortal asks you how your eye was mutilated and made blind, say the Odysseus, the city-sacker Laertes' son, who lives in Ithaca, destroyed your sight" (Wilson 9 502-506). Wilson saying "your eye was mutilated and made blind" shows Odysseus's cocky masculinity coming out since he is the King of Ithaca; having everything perfect, makes Odysseus look down on Cyclops and make fun of someone's facial features.
Penelope, his wife, is greatly affected; as many greedy suitors disrespect her and move into their home to try and win her hand in marriage. Throughout ‘The Odyssey’, the greed and folly of men play a huge part in increasing the difficulty and severity of Odysseus’s situations and ultimately change his fate and the directions of his journey. The greed and folly of men are largely represented by Penelope’s suitors. In the very first book of The Odyssey, the disgusting actions of the suitors were introduced to the readers.
Appetites and Their Consequences in The Odyssey In Homer’s The Odyssey, Circe advises Odysseus that in order to survive, he must control his appetite to have a good reputation. On some occasions Odysseus listens to the advice, but at other times his intense appetite blocks him from achieving strong leadership. Odysseus wants to be well liked and perceived as a hero, but as Circe tries to warn him, sometimes survival must come before the desire to be a hero.
In the books The Odyssey by Homer, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinback the authors explore their main characters’ problems. In The Odyssey, the protagonist, Odysseus, faces multiple challenges while on his way home from the Trojan War. Similarly, in Romeo and Juliet, the two main characters have to figure out how to be together despite their family feuds. During Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie must adapt to life with their own limitations and the harsh reality of the world. Between all three books, the main characters have to challenge themselves and solve problems to reach their initial goal.
TS1 (Thesis): In The Odyssey, Homer depicts Odysseus’ real foe as the theme of temptation with displays of hubris and lustrous goddesses, which portrays the importance of being vigilant to not submit to temptation. In Book 2 of, The Odyssey, many suitors are vying for Penelope's hand in marriage. They plan to take over the throne and assume the role as king because they believe Odysseus will never return. Telemachus, Odysseus's son calls upon the assembly with the hopes that they can do something about the many suitors in his house. While everyone involved, including the suitors, the assembly, Telemachus, and Penelope share blame for this stalemate, ultimately, the suitors are the most to blame for the fact that they've been consuming Odysseus's wealth for almost four years.
The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
The Odyssey By: Homer Love is made of time, care, patience, determination, effort and most importantly faith. The situation that really made me distinguish the difference between the novels of “The Odyssey” to its movie is in the part of Penelope’s interaction with her suitors. In the movie the suitors of Penelope treat her in a harsh and terrible way, and the suitors wear out their welcome in her palace and she wants them to leave but they will not. In addition, Penelope and Telemachus are treated with disrespect by the suitors and when Odysseus threatened them then he killed each other and every one of the suitors.
