Have you ever read a book and felt a common idea nestled in every chapter? Like there was a needle in every haystack of a chapter that you couldn’t put your finger on the first time? These stories usually encompass the broader picture of real life, and they utilize themes to convey their message to the readers. For example, in the book
Buried Onions, the author Gary Soto reveals the common theme of death. He shows how death shapes our lives in huge ways through different events in the book, such as the sorrowful past of Eddie’s family and relatives or Eddie’s fight with Angel at the end of the story.

The theme of death is revealed and commonly referred to in the book Buried
Onions, through the emotions that Eddie undergoes. For instance, “I let my mind go wild with violent options, for Mr. Yellow Shoes seemed like a dude who could ice someone, stick a knife into a chest and step back quietly to watch the blood flow red as a scarf” …show more content…

This depicts the developed paranoia he has due to the losses he has been through and ones that constantly weigh down on him. Eddie jumps to making assumptions about certain situations which all stem from the notion of death, and specifically from the murder of Jesús. In addition, “I felt like crying. All my life everyone was pulling away from me - Father, my mom, Jesús, school friends, and homies who disappeared in three lines of the obituary column” (Soto 143). We see here that Eddie has developed depression over the fact that death has snapped its jaws on his family members and close ones. Eddie’s emotions are definitely a driving force throughout Buried Onions that are highlighted due to the common theme of
