Have you ever thought about how these people are important to us? Why they made statues of them? Is there any connection between nowadays and the period of time they were alive. Last class we went to Commonwealth Avenue Mall, we had our class right there. Professor Buckley gave us a quick brief about each statue. This paper will talk about the statue of George Washington, the statue of General John Glover, Vendome Fire Memorial and Boston Women’s Memorial.
The statue of George Washington was the second statue to arrive in the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. In 1869, and it was made by Thomas Ball. He worked single handedly on the plaster cast for four years, mixing the plaster a bucket at a time. His primary model for the horse was a local charger named Black Prince. The piece could not be cast until after the Civil War because bronze was needed for the war effort. This statue of George Washington was not as President but as the Army’s Commander. When you look at it, at the statue and trying to link what you know about George Washington or what he did, it leads you to imagine and to connect the words you are hearing and the picture together. Its story is that in 1972, a tragic fire at the Hotel Vendome claimed the lives of nine firefighters, who were killed when a section of the burning building collapsed. Years later, this granite and bronze structure honors those firefighters and marks the hotel’s former location. What I like in this statue the helmet and the jacket. It made me think one day someone was wearing it, and he is not here anymore, but when you do something good in your life your name will be known for many years later.
