My time at the University of Tampa has been filled with experiences that have prepared me for my future career and everyday life. The communication department has been a significant part of that preparation. I have been able to apply the skills learned in the classroom in each task I dedicate myself to. My journey throughout college was overall positive, and that has a lot to do with the courses and professors I experienced. To fill my baccalaureate requirement, I registered for Media Writing. For that same semester, I was put on a waitlist for American Sign Language course. As the summer progressed, I was still on the waitlist for a class. Through the chaos of seeing what was available, I signed up for another communication course, Mass Media and Society with Prof. Meredith. Mass Media and Society made me hesitant to take more classes in the field. Although the professor was passionate about her research, she focused intently on technology that is no longer relevant in modern society. The course did not accurately expose me to the communication department. Prof. Grimes’ Media Writing was a much better experience. The class required us to create a mock public relations press conference for an event of our choosing. This project was the excellent experience of real-world applications of a communication degree. At the time I was working at Metropolitan Ministries’ outreach department. I was questioning changing my major based on Media Writing. I found most people that I worked with had degrees in communication-related fields. This inspired me to change my
