Community Service Synthesis Argument Essay The word community service means voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. However, 20% of school districts require community service in order to graduate. 80% of students gained traits from required volunteering. Weather the students do or do not want to volunteer the certain individuals realize helping others is worthwhile. If the student does community service for the right reasons the student will be introduced to good values and morals and be more engaged in the community and the outside world. Community service teaches good values and morals such as responsibility, selflessness, thankfulness and smarter decision-making. Sortal writes, “The purpose is to give them a taste of the real world, and perhaps explore a career and create habit of volunteering, Sortal’s writing reflects the positive outcome of required community service. The biggest benefit the students will receive is the guidance to help them find a career they might be interested in. When students volunteer they might enjoy what they are doing and want to take it up as a career after graduating. Students will also learn some of the struggles families have to go through each day. For example, homeless families, hungry, and parentless children, students will realize that they are fortunate and become more thankful for all that they were blessed with and result in them volunteering and donating more. Students also learn to engage in their communities, “Students who volunteer… Are more engaged in their communities… Develop as citizens” (Sparks). Students engage in their communities by helping at food banks, distrusting food to hungry families, fixing homes due to disasters, and helping animals get adopted at animal shelters. Students gain a greater interpersonal development, ability to work well with others, and build leadership and communication skills which result in growing as citizens of their community.
