Company Q’s recent decisions, their effect on the community and their attitude towards social responsibility Company Q is a small company that is based in a major metropolitan area and operates a chain of local grocery stores. Recent events have shown that Company Q’s management need to evaluate their views towards social responsibility in order to boost their social capital and in turn their profitability. The first action that Company Q recently felt was necessary was closing a small number of stores in a higher-crime rate areas due to these stores consistently losing money. Fortunately Company Q management have seen this as an opportunity and have begun to offer a limited amount of these higher margin products to their stores. While this is a good start it would be good of the company to not only consider margin when deciding which of these products to add, and possibly devoting more of their store to these types of products, which can help both the community with having healthier options and the store’s profits by gaining new customers who come to the store just for these products. The last decision that was made resulted in a missed opportunity for added social capital and lowered corporate taxes. Management declined when approached by a local food bank for donations of day-old products due to the potential for fraud and stealing by employees. Careful oversight of this program however could prevent this and boost the company’s reputation in the community while a denial of this service could actually be harmful to the community’s reputation and result in boycotts or customers looking for alternative shopping
