The English and the Spaniards were some of the most powerful nations in the 16th century. So, when they both decided to take on the endeavor of establishing a settlement in the New World it was a big deal. Both counties had their own way of tackling the colonization of the Americas, however one proved more effective than the other. The one being the Spanish, within their time in the Americas before 1660 they were able to accomplish far more than the English all because of how they chose to go about creating and sustaining their settlements. In the Iberian countries Spain found and harvested a lot of silver. For the time of 1503-1650 the Spanish were able to bring back 6 million kilograms of silver to city of Seville. Not only that the brought back 185,000 kilograms of gold as well. With all of this wealth Phillip II of Spain chose to pay his armies as well as his foreign debts. The gold and silver also affected the global economy by sending all of Europe into a rampant inflation which was later known as the Price Revolution. The Spanish silver was also used in trade as well as had a great effect on the Chinese economy. One of their first known attempts at colonization is the colonization of the Roanoke Island. The English trying to colonize this area turned out to be a big failure. One of the reason this colony failed so much was the fact that individual English people would often jeopardized the relations they had with the natives through acts of violence that were rash. When in came to handling the Native Americans diplomacy and consistency were great way to build trust and goodwill between the two. However, due to the rash actions of many it formed a bad relationship between the Indians and the English. Without that relationship the English people were not able to learn properly learn how to survive and live in the area. Because of this and many other English mistakes it lead to the downfall of the Roanoke Island colony. Years later the colony of Jamestown appeared.
