A hero, or someone who stands up for what they believe in and goes the extra mile. A hero’s qualities vary from person to person but there is a recurring trait that is the most important: courage. Courage is immortal. It is present in heroes regardless of what time period they arose in. For example, Mark Zuckerberg and Beowulf are heroes. Beowulf is a hero that is said to have lived in the 6th century and Mark Zuckerberg is a 21st century hero yet they both have the characteristic quality of courage. While they both are, they were courageous for different reasons.

One was brave for fame, and the other to pursue his dream. Beowulf was a show-off. He fought Grendel without armor and boasted, “I could kill [Grendel] with my sword; I shall not… I will meet him with my hands empty”(678-684). At the time, heroes wanted to be immortalized, and the only way was to be famous. This was the backbone reason for which Beowulf was courageous. On the other hand, Zuckerberg had a vision and that vision required courage to achieve. He did not do it for money or fame. He refused a $1 billion dollar offer from Yahoo and later a $15 billion dollar offer from Microsoft. “The thing I really care about is the mission, making the world open,” said Zuckerberg (Gerber). Zuckerberg was courageous for the better reason, therefore he is the better hero. Most heroes are notably courageous. They can have different reasons for being courageous, though. A kid could amass courage and face the school bully just to impress a girl and show his dominance. While another kid may do the same but to stand up for the victims of the bully’s harassment.
