Slamming On the Brakes in the ‘70s
In the early 1970s, a muscle car crisis appeared on the horizon. Tighter government safety regulations and nationwide gas shortages led to a dramatic shift in automaker and consumer priorities. The public wanted practicality over pizzaz, and Mustang and Camaro followed suit. In 1974, Ford put out the Mustang II, using the lowly Pinto’s platform, and Chevy did only slightly better, launching a redesigned Camaro with a hatchback body.
This sudden change in America’s car culture lasted nearly two decades. Both Ford and Chevy attempted redesigns in the late 70s and early 80s, but none of those efforts had the appeal of their 1960's counterparts. However, from the perspective of the muscle car fanatic, there was reason for hope.
