Griffin Hildebrand Mrs.Holsather-Nelson Washington State History, Period 2 8 Febuary 2023 Coastal vs Plateau: A Native American Cultural Comparison While Native American tribes exist all over the United States, none are more interesting and rich in cultural history than those of Washingtton State. Although the Coastal and Plateau tribes share the Pacific Northwest, it is safe to say that they have developed very different cultures and ways of life. You can find some of these differences and similarities in what they ate, the tools they had, and what they wore. To begin with, the Coastal and Plateau tribes cuisine was very different due to their location and animal population. Although they both had access to the columbia river and feasted on fish, the game that they hunted was very different. While they had similar tools, the materials used and the purposes for these tools varied immensely. Coastal tribes had a bigger need for tools to brave the Pacific with and hunt for whales and fish. So they crafted beautiful canoes and harpoon points out of animal bones, and a uniquestyle of fishing hooks. They were also among the first Native Americans to use Iron in their tools. Bark from cedar and other trees was also essential to the Coastal tribes for weaving things like rope, headbands, baskets and even clothing. While Plateau tribes tools were crafted mostly from parts of the buffalo or branches of a bush, such as the wood from branches of a bush being used for bow and arrows, and the string being made of buffalo sinew. They also made more deocrative things, and things to make life more comfortable such as a wind chime crafted from buffalo hooves or a back rest made from
