Chesnie Blankenship Comparing County Jails Wabash County Jail (WCJ) was built in 1979, so the conditions of the WCJ aren’t the best; compared to the Miami County Jail (MCJ). MCJ was built in 2009. The capacity of the WCJ only holds 72 inmates but is holding right now around 84 inmates. WCJ was getting over its rated capacity so they sent 36 inmates over to the MCJ. The MCJ holds 240 inmates and has right now around 117 inmates. The three main differences between the WCJ and the MCJ are their recreational rooms, the living conditions, and the visitation systems. At WCJ there is only one recreational room (rec room). The only thing that they have in there is two big picnic table. They did have other things in the rec room but no matter what it was, the inmates always found a way to destroy the equipment that were provided. WCJ or any Jail is required to have fresh air for the inmates and WCJ does not have that for the inmates what so ever. The MCJ has provided fresh air for the inmates. The MCJ has two rec rooms. When Sheriff Robert took us into the library he explained to us that the room is used for almost everything as in the medical room, conference room, and the library. When Sheriff Robert told us that I thought that was just ridiculous and something needed to be done about it. The WCJ seem warm and gloomy to me. There was certain parts at the WCJ that look like it just got remodeled and then there was the cell block that just looks worn out. The commissary didn’t really seem professional to me, honestly to me it just looks like some lady chilling in a closet with a lot of random items.
