Douglas MacArthur once said, “You are remembered for the rules you break.” Hester Prynne and Miley Cyrus are impeccable proof of this quote. Hester Prynne is the main character in “The Scarlet Letter”, a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorn. Hester is a prime example of a societal outcast. She is criticized for her faults, and shamed for her sins. She continues to push back against society even though they treat her this way. She is a symbol of rebellion, an old-fashioned activist or reformer. Even though the novel is fictional, there are many people that resonate with Hester Prynne today. The one who stands out the most to me is the world renowned pop star Miley Cyrus. The similarities between Miley and Hester are infinite. If the novel “The Scarlet Letter” were not written before Miley was born, I would believe the character was based off of her. One prime example of their shared stories are that they both started out trapped in one way or another and took extreme measures to break free. Hester Prynne was trapped in a marriage. They do not apologize for their sin. “Speak out the name! That, and thy repentance, may avail to take the scarlet letter off thy breast… "I will not speak!" answered Hester” (Hawthorn 62). Even though Hester is given the chance to apologize and give up her punishment, she stays true to what she believes and does not repent. She owned her punishment, “Never afterwards did it quit her bosom [she kept the scarlet letter as a reminder]” (Hawthorn 253). Miley owns her punishment of being outcast by making a scarlet letter of her own. In a tweet Miley Cyrus wrote “MILEY IS CANCELLED!!!!” (Cyrus). She takes the lead on the story before anyone else
