Disney vs. Grimm Throughout time there has been an alteration of fairy tales. Grimm brothers original stories are much more graphic and violent than the fairy tales we think of today. Disney dispalies stories that are less graphic and fit for children, while still using the main idea and concept of the original Grimm brothers’ stories. The alteration of fairy tales is displayed throughout the stories from the Grimm brothers and the newer stories brought by Disney. Jacob and Wilhelm were two brothers who grew up together and who both shared a love and passion for fairy tales. Their father passed away when they were both young and it affected the brothers greatly for many years. Later in their life they went off to college. In the original Rapunzel, she has premarital sex with the prince up in her tower, “...the two spend many days together living in “joy and pleasure”(History 1). During the time of the Grimm brothers’ this was not something that was socially accepted at all. Traces of child abuse is also found in the Grimm’s stories. Child abuse is shown in the original Snow White story when the huntsman takes her into the forest with orders to come back with her liver and lungs. There is graphic violence in Cinderella when “...the evil stepsisters cut off their toes and heels trying to make the slipper fit and later have their eyes pecked out by doves…”(History 2). In original oral fairy tales wicked mothers were portrayed often, “Grimms originally included some evil biological mothers…”(History 2) until the Grimm brothers turned the mothers into step mothers. This could be linked to the tragic death of their father at a young age, leaving their single mother to raise them on her own. All of the violence in the stories can trace back to their heartbreak during their father's death, as it affected the brothers greatly for a long period of
