Punching or kicking results in disqualification, as submission holds are also illegal. The ultimate goal in folk-style wrestling is to put the opponent to their back and pin them. Also, there are three periods in the sport. Each period, you start in a different position. During the first period, you start in the neutral position, which is on your feet. However, you are only allowed so many stall calls before points are awarded to the opponent. The boundaries of a wrestling mat prevent stalling and often move wrestlers to the middle of the mat. Consequently, the clock of an MMA match will never stop. Fighters compete in an octagon where there are no boundaries. It is almost like there is no escape. There are no restarts in MMA, so fighters receive no break until the end of each round. In addition, they fight on a raised surface, as the octagon they fight in is typically elevated.
