The Speech in the Virginia Convention by Patrick Henry and the Speech in the Convention by Benjamin Franklin both have similarities and differences but they are both about the views on compromise and when to stand firm. Patrick Henry had a better standpoint then Benjamin Franklin did in their speeches. Patrick Henry’s speech had a stronger point of view than Benjamin Franklin The difference between these speeches is that Patrick Henry implores his countrymen to declare war against the British he wanted to fire up the representatives at the convection in VA.
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were both presidents that had a huge impact on the structure of our beautiful country. As they built and thought of knew theories and ideas the country expanded to what is now called the United States of America. With very different times and struggles though both presidencies it was always clear that as leaders of the United States they were going to finish anything they started or fought for to keep the country intact. Even though both these presidents were considered successful they were both motivated and raised in totally different ways. Washington was raised in a wealthy lifestyle as he grew up.
Patrick Henry was the first governor for the state of Virginia, and also a major figure in the American Revolution. Henry was not very educated, but he had skills that pushed him to leadership in the Revolutionary era. As a member of the House of Burgesses, Henry opposed the 1765 Stamp Act. He helped organize Virginia’s first Committee of Correspondence and served as a representative to the First and Second Continental Congress.
When Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts, it was not expected that he would be one of the most eminent individuals during the American Revolution era, nevertheless he had earned the historic reputation of an inspirational leader. Without Franklin traveling to Paris persuading the French King to help during the American Revolution, the French-American Alliance would not have been created. Benjamin Franklin became “famous” in France and his popularity contributed to the successful completion of the French and American Alliance. As well as securing the official French-American alliance, Franklin helped with the repealing of the Stamp Act by testifying against it in the English court. Although he originally thought that the colonists
Edward Mitchell 10/22/2016 English 10 Essay Unit 1 Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson played a large role in motivating the fight toward freedom in the weeks leading up to the Revolutionary War and immediately following it. Each believed in the fundamental right to be free from rule. Patrick Henry appealed to the people’s fear of war. Thomas Jefferson was able to convince people that together, they could form a new nation. The writings of each man reveals a very chaotic time in America’s history and the leadership, determination, and boldness of Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson ensured that when change came, the people were ready for it.
“Give me Liberty” One’s famous words once said “Give me liberty or give me death”(Henry 87). These well known words were said by Patrick Henry who simply wanted his rights away from the British. In the article, Protesters Got Dragged Out of a Hearing on the Republican Healthcare Repeal Bill, the protesters also wanted their rights. In other words, both texts connect due to the corresponding traits regarding the revolving topic of liberty. For Patrick Henry, he had enough of the British, and their scheming ways.
The speeches these men brought within society served as inspiration to stand up for themselves whether to create peace or war. As Patrick Henry spoke of the suffering and poverty the people went through, he tried to make a connection of feelings along with giving his listeners the willpower to do something about it. Whereas Kennedy rather stated his actions that were going to be put in place for the good of the people while he was enrolled in office. So the question that’s brought to the table is who achieved more success and persuasion within their speech and who deserved the people’s acceptance of ideas.
President Jefferson’s style was very different from that of Adams and Washington; because of that, many Americans looked forward to his inauguration. Jefferson in Office As President, Jefferson believed strongly that the primary functions of government were to: • Protect the nation from foreign threats, •Deliver the mail, and • Collect customs duties, Jefferson hit the ground running with his attempts to put his republican ideas into practice. He urged the newly won Democratic-Republican controlled Congress to allow the Alien and Sedition Acts to expire. Jefferson then lowered military spending and reduced the size of the U.S. Army, reduced the number of Navy ships, and urged newly appointed Secretary of Treasury Albert Gallatin to find ways
I would imagine that the idea of an independent American was not an easy idea for many to stand by. Many would have probably thought that it was an effort that was not worth the risks, that fighting the kingdom of Britain would bring too heavy a cost. But of course, there were those with enough courage to speak openly about their feelings on their country 's situation. Patrick Henry seemed like a man that was willing to do whatever it took to gain independence. Henry’s letter made me proud to be an American, and to know that these men and women were coming together to fight for a better future.
Kelly Baltazar History 17A Mon. & Wed. 10:00-11:15 A.M. Radical And The Republican Paper Abraham Lincoln is known as the republican while Fredrick Douglass is known as the radical, both of these men kept their distance from each other although Abraham Lincoln (the president) and Fredrick Douglass (a runaway slave) knew who each other were, it took them a long time for them to get together and work on the slavery problem together. Douglass just had one issue though, he didn't really trust Lincoln and thought that it had took Lincoln too long to proclaim emancipation. Both men came up up a lot, both men are important historical figures and what many people tend to want to know is why?
“Give me liberty or give me death” This was what Patrick Henry said during the American Revolutionary War so people would join with him to fight the British. The American Revolutionary war was from 1775 to 1783, we were fighting the British for freedom. America was able to beat the British because of many heroes and leaders. In the poem "Ode to Dirt" by Sharon Olds, the speakers complex attitude toward dirt evolves from one of disgust to one of admiration and even approval. Olds uses a variety of word choices and figurative language to convey this growth. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker describes dirt as "mud / and dust / and dirt / clods / that stick to your shoes. " The use of these simple, plain words conveys a sense of disgust and disrespect for dirt. The speaker goes on to describe how, as a child, they were forced to clean the dirt off their shoes and wash their hands "as if God / and the germs would be angry with us."
Franklin vs. Jefferson An epic clash between two Founding Fathers! Both were prolific writers, Jefferson of the Declaration of Independence and his own version of the Bible, Franklin of Poor Richard 's Almanack and countless newspapers and pamphlets. Franklin invented the lightning rod, bifocals, and a carriage odometer, but Jefferson was no scientific slouch himself and filled Monticello, which he also designed, with a number of little inventions of his own, including a gadget that made copies of letters as he wrote them. Jefferson also carried out a number of early archeological studies.
Benjamin Franklin and Patrick Henry were two important people in American History who made a difference. Franklin’s “Speech in the Convention and Henry’s “Speech in the Virginia Convention” helped guide our nation to independence and democracy. Both speeches have good examples of rhetorical devices, but I think Patrick Henry speech ‘Speech in the Virginia Convention” has better rhetorical devices. Some examples are rhetorical question, logos, diction, and imagery. Patrick Henry style and content is more effective then Benjamin Franklin because Patrick uses a plethora of things such as imagery, “There is no retreat but in submission and slavery!
