Essay #2 Two Narrators in Contrasts “Where are you from?” by Patricia Park and “Grant and Lee: A study in contrasts” by Bruce Catton are both compare and contrast literary works. In the story “Where are you from?”, the narrator compares her different views of who she is and where she belongs. In the historical essay “Grant and Lee: A study in contrasts”, the writer compares the U.S. Civil War generals Ulysses S. Grant, who led the Union army, and Robert E. Lee, who led the forces of the Confederacy. Even though “Where are you from?” and “Grant and Lee: A study in contrasts” both are compare and contrast essays, their narration style, major characters and narrative tone are different. The major character of the essay “Where are you from?” is the author herself. She writes about her minds and feelings who she is and where she belongs. She makes a point about the need to identify with the place one actually comes from. Although she grew up in New York, she never identified herself as American. According to her, she and many ‘ethnic’ Americans are always facing “subtle rhetorical reminders of out-group status”.
