The Vietnam and Gulf Wars were both conflicts that the United States was involved in. In both instances the US did not formally declare war on any country. The Vietnam war was originally a battle between North and South Vietnam. The Northern part of the country was a communist regime and fought to convert the rest of Vietnam to their form of an ideal communist government. Southern Vietnam was strongly against Communism and fought to keep the north from taking over and by doing so, kept the communist outside of that part of the country. The United States, in their conquest to stop the spread of Communism, sent troops and resources to the Southern Vietnamese in order to stop the infestation of Communism in Vietnam. The tactics employed by these military leaders in the Vietnam War and Gulf War were similar and different, reflecting the evolution of military strategy over time. In the Vietnam war General Westmore was in command of the United States Army and saw out every battle force in Vietnam. Võ Nguyên Giáp was the leader and commander of the VietCong.(“Key People | Vietnam War”) In the Gulf War, General Normal Schwarzkopf was the head general and overlooked all missions in the conflict. Finally, Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein was the president of Iraq and gave the order to invade Kuwait. For example, General Westmore’s plan for the war was to ask for reinforcements and attack in bulk with the soldiers. His hope was for the VietCong to be overwhelmed from the eventual onslaught to them, Which did not happen. This is vastly different between the guerilla tactics we have talked about within the Vietnam War and is much different from carpet bombing.
