Tom can be compared to many other characters like Hilly Holbrook from The Help. Although Hilly is the antagonist in the book they have many things in common. “Hilly on the surface is the ideal Southern housewife: loyal to her husband, adored by her friends and neighbors, and loving to her two children. But underneath the surface, Hilly harbors viciously racist beliefs that spur her to treat the black women in the novel as if they were subhuman,” (Plaue). Both Tom and Hilly control the people they hang out with. Everyone listens to them and they are the ones that make the decision. Even though Huck knew they shouldn’t go to that extreme to rescue Jim he still listens to Tom. They are also influenced on how to treat African Americans by the time period they live in. Data from The Goonies is a young kid who uses his own tricks to fight off bad guys. Data is creative, smart, and quick on his feet. Tom and Data are alike because they both think creatively when it comes to a certain scenario. When the “bad guys” were coming for Data and his friends he uses his quick thinking to invent a crazy trap. When Tom and Huck were trying to figure out ways to rescue Jim, Tom thought of crazy ways to rescue him by thinking of scenarios from the books he read. Buddy from Elf is another character similar to Tom because they both do stuff based on fiction. Buddy is a man who acts like a child because he was raised in the North Pole. They both act childish because that’s how they were raised. Buddy was raised by another elf and he wasn’t taught about the real world while Tom learned his childish ways from reading books.
