What do you choose, to be with your true love or live a free life? If you had to choose between love and your life, what would you choose? Jeffrey chose love, while Wesley Harris chose a free life over friendship. Jeffrey put his life on the life, so he could be with his true love Dorcas. On the other hand, Wesley put his and his friends' lives on the line, so he could escape to freedom and live a better life. Wesley Harris and Jeffrey had many characteristics that were similar and many that were different, which made both articles more relatable. These two slaves were similar in many ways. The first difference between these two men is Harris was selfish and Jeffrey was selfless. "My three other companions, who were captured, were sent to Westminster jail, where they were kept three weeks, and afterwards sent to Baltimore and sold for twelve hundred dollars a piece, as I was informed while at the tavern in Terrytown." This statement from the first passage supports this because it shows that Harris was not worried about anyone, but hisself. In this situation Harris was not worried about saving the other three he was just worried about himself. "Though his voice trembles, there is no embarrassment in his manner; his fears have killed all the bashfulness that would naturally attend such a recital to a stranger, and before unsympathizing witnesses; he feels that he is pleading for the happiness of her he loves, as well as for his own, and his tale is told in a frank and manly way." This statement that the author provided in the second article shows that Jeffrey did not want anything but to be with Dorcas. Another difference is Harris was rebellious and Jeffrey was loyal. "I at once shot him with my pistol, but in consequence of his throwing up his arm, which hit mine as I fired, the effect of the load of my pistol was much turned aside; his face, however, was badly burned, besides his shoulder being wounded." This statement from the first article shows that Harris was rebellious man. "And to-morrow, Jeffrey and Dorcas are to say their tearful fare-well, and go their separate ways in life, to meet no more as mortal beings." The author stated this statement in the second article, and this statement shows that Jeffrey was loyal. The final difference is Harris was hurt physically and Jeffrey was hurt emotionally. "I was then badly beaten with guns." Harris was physically hurt in this statement, which can be found in the first article.
