During the period 1450-1750 CE, both maritime and land based empires formed for economic incentives such as profit, resources,and expansion. However, the differences between the land based and maritime empires is, some promoted direct and indirect rule, syncretism, and religious toleration. Spain and Portugal were both Maritime based empires. Whereas, the Mughal and the Ming empire were mainly land based. Both Land based and Maritime empires shared the same economic idea of mercantilism and expansion. Therefore, both types of empires believed in an economic policy that included beliefs such as, a set amount of wealth in the world, and a country should have more exports than imports. The Mughal empire tolerated european trade, and helped gain profit, and expansion. The Ming empire removed Mongol influence and integrated Chinese culture, which gained more interest and gradually began to expand the empire. Therefore, the thing that made each empire unique was the way each Empire promoted either, indirect or direct rule. Indirect rule was a common coping mechanism of the Spanish and Portugal empire, as this government was used to control parts of their colonies and states rather than taking over all of the empire. This was common in Spain because the king had viceroys who acted as the representative for each colony or area. Portugal used indirect rule because they had non-established countries, and people were often grouped around the edge of the empire. Whereas, both the Mughal and Ming had a direct form of governing, Spain led more towards and indirect ruling because the king had viceroys who acted as the representatives of certain areas to the empire.
