Lewis and Clark’s expedition was a bit different from Pike’s. While Lewis and Clark were exploring the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase, Pike on the other hand was exploring the southern parts. Throughout Lewis and Clark’s expedition they were able to make a connection with the native tribes. By becoming friends with the Natives this showed Lewis and Clark the land that the US would start moving into. During their expedition they cataloged 108 botanical and zoological specimens, 68 mineral specimens, as well as Clark’s map of the US.

Second, Lewis and Clark were respectful to the Indigenous people they encountered on their expedition because they only attacked back when necessary. According to Document B authored by Meriweather Lewis, it says: “R. Fields, as he seized his gun, stabbed the Indian to the heart with his knife.” This evidence supports my claim because one of Lewis’ men had a valid reason to stab the Indian.

I will be comparing two legendary explorers, John Colter and Tom Murphy. The main difference is probably the time difference that they explored. John Colter started his most famous journey, the Lewis and Clark journey, was over 180 years before Tom Murphy 's famous journey. But they are similar because they are both very famous and looked up to by explorers. To start, John Colter is almost 160 years older than Tom Murphy.
President Jefferson told Lewis and Clark to “cultivate good relations with the Sioux” because at the time “the Sioux were the dominant power on the northern and central Great Plains more than able to hold their own against white Americans in the first half of the nineteenth century.” (The American Journey Ch.13 Pg.349). This was because the Sioux were able to successfully mix important components of American life with their traditions. Unfortunately these components including guns they had acquired from the French and horses introduced to the New World by the Spanish helped the Sioux push weaker tribes to the south and west of the Missouri River basin. These weak tribes became dependent on the Sioux.
The Lewis and Clark expedition was a turning point in American history. It radically expanded our current knowledge of what used to be the Louisiana Territory. Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes were both famous Spanish adventurers during the Age of Exploration. When the explorers came upon land, they encountered two different cultures.
