Comparative Writing Essay There are many things you could compare about Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Were they both self made? Were they ambitious? Were they both against slavery?
“Now I’ve been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave,” said Harriet Tubman. Both Booker T. Washington and Fredrick Douglas experienced the horrible life of slavery. The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas tells the story of a slave who experienced many hardships, while Up From Slavery tells of a slave who was fortunate to be freed as a young boy. Booker T. Washington and Fredrick Douglas lived in the 1800’s.
In this essay, I will compare and contrast the lives and legacies of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818 and spent the first 20 years of his life in bondage.
Mark Twain and Frederick Douglass both have interesting ways of writing. There are similarities and differences in their writing. They each have their own personal preference toward their style, tone, and perspective. Each story was a remembrance of boyhood written in first person. As evident, Twain’s story takes place as a boy in a town on the Mississippi River.
Lincoln and Douglass were self-made, self-educated, and ambitious, and each rose to success from humble backgrounds. Douglass, of course, was an escaped slave. Douglass certainly and Lincoln most likely detested slavery from his youngest days. But Lincoln from his young manhood was a consummate politician devoted to compromise, consensus-building, moderation and indirection. Douglass was a reformer who spoke and wrote eloquently and with passion for the abolition of slavery
“I wished I could be as free as they would be when they got to be men.” Frederick Douglass said this because he is a slave for life and wants to be free. Abraham Lincoln has similar problems with slavery, the only difference is that Lincoln isn’t a slave. Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass and House Divided are two similar texts. Frederick Douglass has problems with being a slave and Lincoln has problems with slavery.

Fredrick Douglas and Benjamin Franklin are both one of the most famous successful in American history. They both followed a certain milestone to make them successful. Even though they are considered hard workers, they both have different obstacles and different views in their lifestyle. Fredrick Douglas used to be a slave who was a fugitive and Benjamin Franklin was young white man who had a rough time with his parent because his parents are very abusive to him. By comparing the difference and similarities by these two great people in American history even though they had their rough times, that does not stop them from their success.
Lincoln’s and Douglass’s views differed from Davis’s because they did not consider the slaves as a chattel. Lincoln declared slavery illegal in the Confederate States in the famous Emancipation Proclamation. There is a famous quote form Douglass: where justice is denied and where any one class is made to feel that society is in an organized conspiracy to oppress and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe. Also, their views differed from Lydia Maria Child’s. Lincoln and Douglass believed the Constitution should be a protection against, rather than a sanction for slavery.
Many know about his relationship with President Abraham Lincoln, the abolition heavy President. Frederick helped convince President Lincoln that African Americans should fight in the Civil War, this was to show blacks also wanted to help their fellow Americans in the war for their freedom. This move of Presidential backing helped many African Americans from his era realize there was hope to be African American in the United States. Douglas’s actions showed blacks aren’t horrible and animals as most saw them, but were patriots and wanted to prosper just as much as everyone else did. This positive outlook for blacks helped many realize slavery was not the right way to run the country, this helped many more Americans become abolitionists and fighters for civil rights.
Fredrick Douglass was born in February of 1818 he was an activist in the abolishment of slavery and a staple of what helped us abolish slavery, of course, there were other people that did help but Frederick Douglass was more known and he worked alone Fredrick Douglass changed my view of all men created equal by simply recruiting African American men to fight in the united states army he changed the view because of the fact that he wanted all men to be equal no matter what race you were, to be honest. Frederick Douglas even wrote his own newspaper article he wrote his own autobiography as well he changed to view successfully that men were all equal instead of only white men. Fredrick Douglas once said “if there is no struggle there is no progress”
The ability to read and write is both creative and destructive. This ability opens your eyes to the world and how beautiful it can be. It also has the potential to destroy your entire grip on reality and expose you to the actual world you live in. It imprisons you yet, releases you from your mental confinement. Some people never escape from this confinement, some do; and those who escape sometimes go on to do great things in life.
