The poems that I chose are the Father/Son poems because it was much easier to understand and explain the differences from each family. In one of the poems, “Those Winter Sundays” the son talks good about his father and how his father is a hard working man and provides things for his family. The other poem, “My Papa’s Waltz” is more about how the relationship between a father and son is not good because he is drunk and because of how the father treats him most of the time. In both of these poems, it is easy to figure out the tone of the speaker and how they feel. Poetry is a unique form of writing that allows writers to express their feelings and thoughts. ‘’My Papa’s Waltz’’ is about how a father and son don’t have a good relationship because the father is drunk all the time and the phrase ‘’The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy.’’ In this poem, it appears that the son is also drunk and can see the concern on his mothers face as he and his father walk in the kitchen bumping into the shelfs, making the pans fall off. ‘’We romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelves.’’ At the end of the poem, the speaker says ‘’You beat time on my head’’ meaning that his father is abusive and hits him, but even though his father does that, he still loves him. We can tell that the tone of this poem is fear because of the way his father is. ‘’Those Winter Sundays’’ is also about a father and son, except this poem is about a father who works hard to provide things for his family. ‘’Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on the blueblack cold.’’ In this poem, you can see a little bit of figurative language at the end of the poem. Both sons in both poems ‘’My Papa’s Waltz’’ and ‘’Those Winter Sundays’’love their father despite the fact that one of them is beaten by his drunk father. Loneliness is also the theme of the other poem because even though the father in the poem ‘’Those Winter Sundays’’ is a hardworking man, his son still doesn’t see him as much and doesn’t talk to him a lot because he is gone most of the time working. In the other poem ‘’My Papa’s Waltz’’ the son is lonely because his father is drunk most of the time, so he can’t really talk to him a lot and also because he gets beaten which also ‘’ruins’’ the father/son relationship. In both poems both sons say they love their fathers despite the fact that they can’t really have a father/son
