Nikola Tesla and Jay Gatsby have a lot of things in common, such as having dedication in pursuing their goals, doing anything to achieve a goal, being extremely timid, and keep the public’s opinion of them at a positive state. After completing his studies at Graz University of Technology, Tesla joined Edison to work on proper DC based electric currents. Tesla proved his capability to Edison by creating the AC current which was a more efficient way of using electricity. However, Edison thought of this as an immature and unstable idea. Later tesla left Edison and moved into Manhattan, New York, to start the Tesla Electric Company. He advanced and expanded on his company, using his intellect to create new electric base products such as the Tesla Coil and the AC light bulb. Eventually Tesla founded the first AC hydroelectric power plant and X rays – using the basic AC technology he produced. He also helped create the Wardenclyff Tower, which although wasn’t finished due to insufficient funding, was highly revolutionary for its time. By the early 1920s, Nikola Tesla suffered from a mental breakdown and eventually came back to work to create the death ray, which he claimed can destroy 10,000 planes from hundreds of miles away. Gatsby comes from the Midwest where he originally lived with a poor farming family. Early in the book, he is known as a dreamer who is rich and wants to be extremely successful and somewhat mysterious. As the story continues it is learned why Gatsby is so mysterious: everything he has done in his adult life was to become “successful and not relate to his parents, and come back together to meet Daisy.
