Odyssey vs O'Brother Final Draft
Despite what most people think, only 10% of the S&P 500’s CEOs graduated from an Ivy League level college. This shows that you do not have to be brilliant in order to be a competent leader. However, this is not the case when it comes to Odysseus from The Odyssey and Everett from O’Brother: Where Art Thou. Although Odysseus and Everett are both clever leaders, Odysseus loses all of his men because he never cares for them, whereas Everett does and therefore his friends survive.
Odysseus and Everett are both clever leaders and they show this many times in their book/movie. For example, when Odysseus and his men visit the Cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus calls himself “ Nohbdy” so that the Cyclops would not know his real name. This comes in handy when they stab the Cyclops in the eye and the Cyclops yells that Nohbdy is stabbing him and the other Cyclops are not worried. This cleverness shows that

When sailing to meet the Laestrygonians, Odysseus knows that if he parks his ship in a certain position, he can escape them if a fight were to break out. However, he doesn’t tell the other ships this. Odysseus should have told them to park their ships where he was so they could be safe. This causes all the other ships but his to be destroyed by the stones thrown by the Laestrygonians. This example of selfishness shows that Odysseus’s crew mates are the last thing on his mind. Later on in the story, Circe tells Odysseus “ he will be the only survivor on this long journey.”(211)Odysseus seems not to care. This is another example of why Odysseus is not caring to his crewmates. Odysseus now knows that if he takes Circe’s path home that he will be the only survivor but he shows no concern. He immediately agrees with her plan and never asks if there is another way. This shows that he is only thinking about himself and does not care for his
